Alhassan Adam of Oxfam will talk about ‘Countering Water Privatisation in Ghana’ and Mansoor Ali of Practical Action will talk about ‘Small Schemes for the better use of Water’

Leicester WDM was right in the middle of Leicester’s favourite day out at the Riverside festival. The sun smiled on us …. there was music, food and lots to do.
It was a wonderful day and many people came to our stall. We had some lively discussions and genuine concern was expressed at the way that some banks invest in ‘dirty finance’. People signed a petition to Business Secretary Vince Cable to ask the Government to make banks declare the impact of their lending on world wide carbon emissions.
Why not take part in an online action and write to Vince Cable asking him to hold banks to account for the impact that their lending has on global warming…. and on the destruction of communities around the world
Members of groups from the East Midlands met in Leicester to learn more about the WDM climate and energy justice campaign. People came from as far afield as Coventry, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire as well as Leicestershire.
Climate change will affect everyone in the world, but will have a much bigger impact on people who live in extreme poverty in the global south. The WDM campaign focusses on the way banks are funding companies responsible for some of the most socially and environmentally destructive projects on the planet.
In Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia, over 9,000 people are already experiencing water shortages due to the Oyu Tolgui mine. The mine is due to be powered by a dirty coal plant that will cause pollution without providing energy for local people.
Why not join a local WDM group and tackle the root courses of poverty and injustice in the world. Contact Find your local group to campaign against poverty.

Dan Iles of WDM will talk about food security, the right of people to choose their own food systems. Food sovereignty advocates listening to farmers, peasants, pastoralists, fisherfolk, indigenous peoples, women, rural youth and environmental organizations, as well as the market and the dominant global food system.
Sheila and Peter Yates will talk about FareShare Leicester. FareShare is a national UK charity supporting communities to relieve food poverty. In 2011/12, the food redistributed by FareShare contributed towards more than 8.6 million meals.
