The people versus the banks conference & WDM AGM

WDM activist conference 2012 – a free public activist conference for anyone with an interest in global justice issues.

1pm-6pm, Saturday 23 June

Venue: University of London Union, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HY

  • Keynote speech and Q&A with Aditya Chakrabortty, economics lead writer at the Guardian.
  • Multimedia talk on Chile’s revolt against neoliberalism with Roberto Navarrete.
  • Debate on co-operatives, their role in tackling poverty and inequality, and as alternatives to corporate banks.
  • Workshops on financial sector lobbying, tackling banks’ role in speculating on food prices and stopping the sell off of natural resources in the name of creating a ‘green economy’.
  • Campaigning skills workshops.

WDM members should be aware that WDM’s Annual General Meeting will take place in the same venue from 10.30am to 12pm (with registration and refreshments from 10am), this will be followed by a session consulting members on the direction of our campaigns from 12 to 12.45pm. A full agenda will be available nearer the time.

May group meeting & AGM

Tuesday 8th May

7:30pm-9pm. Monthly campaign meeting, discussing upcoming campaigns and activities. Newcomers very welcome.

The May meeting will also be our AGM. As well as looking back on successes during the year, we look forward to the future – and crucially, which people are going to have the named positions within the group. These positions are:

Secretary (the current secretary would like to stand down, so please consider standing for this role)
Treasurer
Newsletter Editor
Press liaison

Food speculation street stunt

Saturday 3rd March, 2012

11am-12pm. We will be doing a piece of street theatre/stunt focusing on food speculation outside Tesco on Cowley Road, Oxford. Come along and have some fun and put across an important message at the same time. If you don’t feel like dressing up, we need people handing out cards etc too.

Witney Fair Trade Market 2012

10:30am – 4:30pm. Oxford WDM will be holding a stall at the popular annual Witney Fair Trade Market put on by WAFTAG.

Fair Trade Christmas Fair

Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th December 2011

2-5pm Sat & Sun: Trading for Development and the Jericho Community Centre are holding their annual Fair Trade Christmas Fair at the Jericho Community Centre (33a Canal Street, Oxford, OX2 6BQ)

As well as fair trade products, there will also be a raffle in aid of the Oxford-based homeless charity, The Gatehouse.
