Connections: Global Inequality, the British Empire and Brexit
TUESDAY 12 FEBRUARY 7.30pm
Oxford Town Hall, St Aldate’s, Oxford OX1 1BX
Speaker: Danny Dorling
(The Town Hall is only 15 minutes’ walk from Oxford Train Station and closer to Gloucester Green Bus Station and city centre bus stops at High Street and Magdalen Street.)
Danny Dorling has worked widely in the fields of inequality and public policy. He will give a thought-provoking talk linking global inequality to Brexit.
His most recent book co-authored with Sally Tomlinson is Rule Britannia. It is a call to leave behind the jingoistic ignorance of the past and build a fairer Britain, eradicating the inequality that blights our society and embracing our true strengths.
In his previous book, Peak Inequality, he explores whether we have now reached ‘peak inequality’. He concludes, crucially, by predicting what the future holds for Britain, as attempts are made to defuse the ticking time bomb while we simultaneously try to negotiate Brexit and react to the wider international situation of a world of people demanding to become more equal.
Danny is Professor of Geography at the University of Oxford and visiting professor at the Universities of London and Bristol. He is also a member of the National Advisory Panel for the Centre for Labour and Social Studies and visiting fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research. He is a patron of RoadPeace.
Next meeting – August
It’s summer and Global Justice Oxford is planning lots of events – please come along at 7.30 on Tuesday 14th August at Oxford Town Hall. New members are always welcome!
Next meeting – May
Hello! First, a huge apology for the lack of updates to our site. We had some technical issues and weren’t able to update anything. However we have our May meeting coming up next week, on Tuesday 8th May at 7:30 PM in Oxford Town Hall. This will be our AGM, where we review the year and make our all important decisions on the core roles of the group – if you’re interested in taking on a larger role in the group this is your chance! And of course, new members are always welcome.
July meeting
The last few months have been a bit of a whirlwind of political upheaval. If you’re interested in joining us in campaigning for social justice around the world maybe you’d like to come along and get invovled with Global Justice Oxford. Our next meeting will be on the 11th July in Oxford Town Hall at 7:30 PM. As it’s summer we’ve got lots of festival events to plan so it’s a great time to sign up and volunteer!
As always you can drop us a line at globaljusticeoxford@gmail.com, tweet us @globaljusticeox, or find us on Facebook (we’re “Global Justice Oxford”)
One World Fair and Green Fair
In Oxford we are lucky enough to have two great events in a short space of time, and Global Justice Oxford will be running a stall at both!
The One World Fair is held on Saturday 19th November in Oxford Town Hall. There will be stalls for fairtrade goods, human rights organisations, environmental groups and much more! This is run by Oxfam, and we will be there all day with campaign information, leaflets and all sorts.
The Green Fair will be held on Saturday 3rd December and is run by the green party, promising to be “a celebration of all things green”! Again we’ll be there with a stall all day so come and find us to find out all about our group.
Hope to see you there, and as always check out our events page to see what we’re planning!
