Justice for the global south: aid and debt cancellation in times of Covid

February 4, 2021 by nottingham

We held a public zoom event on Wednesday 10th February, 2021, where Nick Dearden , Global Justice Now and Nadia Whittome, MP spoke on defending aid, making it more effective and just, debt cancellation, and climate finance.

Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now (GJN), talked about how we can support justice for the global south in the times of Covid-19. He discussed GJN’s campaign to not just defend the aid budget, against the government’s merger of DfID and planned cuts to the 0.7% target, but also to make it more effective and just. He also highlighted how debt is built into the global financial system, and how we can support GJN’s work campaigning for debt cancellation.

Nadia Whittome, Labour MP for Nottingham East, spoke about aid and debt cancellation from a Labour perspective, confirming that debt cancellation is Labour party policy, and pointing out the vested interest we all have in a global recovery and building economic resistance.

Both Nick and Nadia expressed optimism that change is possible.

Campaigning to stop the US trade deal

October 27, 2020 by nottingham

We’ve been campaigning recently in Nottingham to stop the US/UK trade deal. Several of us were at the Green Festival stall in Sneinton Market on Saturday 3rd October, and as you can see we hung our banner against the deal at St Peter’s Church last Saturday, 24th October, on the national day of action. On Monday we took the banner to the London Road roundabout, outside the BBC building, during the morning rush hour.

For more details about the campaign and actions you can take, see https://www.globaljustice.org.uk/usdeal

Stop the toxic trade deal with Trump

June 10, 2020 by nottingham

We’d like to invite you to a Global Justice Nottingham event on Zoom on Tuesday 16 June.

Stop the toxic trade deal with Trump

When: Tuesday 16 June at 7.30
Where: on Zoom
With Jean Blaylock, Global Justice Now’s lead trade campaigner.

To attend, please email globaljusticenottingham@gmail.com, and we will send you the link to join the meeting.

What we’ll discuss:

Johnson’s government has started formal negotiations for a trade deal with the US. This could see chlorinated chicken on our shelves, US corporations deeper in the NHS and action on the climate emergency blocked.

We can’t let this damaging deal happen. Join us to discuss the issues and find out how we can resist a trade deal with Trump.

In spite of medical advances, millions of people around the world suffer and die from treatable conditions because they cannot afford to pay for expensive medicine.

Drug companies can charge runaway prices because new drugs are protected by legal monopolies. This model has made the pharmaceutical industry the most profitable in the world.

The companies justify high prices by claiming they need to recoup their research and development costs. But nine of the top ten pharmaceutical companies spend more on marketing than on research and development. And the majority of innovative early-stage research is actually publicly-funded.

We say it’s time to put people before profit in the global drug industry.
