A Transition Cafe event exploring how community and complementary currencies all round the world are gaining popularity as conventional economies become shakier. These local community-based mutual aid networks don’t just provide a reward for people’s work, they foster a sense of community spirit and allow individuals to discover, develop and value their own abilities. Come and hear how the Sheffield LETS and St Mary’s Timebuilders are doing in Sheffield, and discuss the merits of local currencies such as the Bristol Pound. Duncan Clark, Journalist and co-author of The Burning Question: we can’t burn half the world’s oil coal and gas. So how do we quit? will speak following SCACC AGM at 6pm. All welcome.

About: Carbon emissions are still accelerating upwards, following an exponential curve that goes back centuries. Clean energy technologies don’t in themselves slow the rate of fossil fuel extraction.
The simple truth is that tackling global warming will mean persuading the world to abandon oil, coal, and gas reserves worth many trillions of dollars. The burning question is whether that can be done. What mix of politics, psychology, economics and technology might be required?

In Chapter 10 The Great Global Slumber – why are we not more fired up about climate change? Duncan deals with psychological and social barriers that hold us back. He does some analysis of the main stream media role. We are therefore inviting our local media to participate in the discussion and comment on their current position on climate change.

Banks, hedge funds and pension funds based in Britain are bankrolling the extraction of fossil fuels all over the world. Many of these dirty energy projects are wrecking communities and fuelling climate change while doing nothing to increase energy access for local people. Join us to demand energy justice. From 20 to 31 October, WDM local groups across the UK will be hosting guests from Colombia and Indonesia who are involved in opposing the expansion of open-cast coal mining in their countries. WDM Sheffield will be hosting their meeting on Wednesday 30th October, and the speakers will be:

• Hendrik Sirengar is the co-ordinator of JATAM, the Indonesian mining advocacy network which works with communities affected by mining.
• Kirsty Wright from WDM will also be explaining the role of our Carbon Capital campaign in reigning in this dirty energy production.
