7:15pm-9:15pm: public meeting Debt in Africa: the good, the bad, the ugly

Speaker: Jonathan Stevenson, Campaigns and Communications Officer for the Jubilee Debt Campaign

Why do countries across Africa keep on borrowing from foreign lenders? Why do lenders keep on lending? And is there a ‘good’ level of debt, or should debt be avoided altogether?

Since the financial crisis in 2008, loans to low-income countries have tripled, and now several African countries are heading for dangerous levels of debt once again.

Join us to find out how debt and the financial system are shaping the lives of people in Africa, and what they mean for essentials like food, water, schools and medicines – and discuss what campaigners can do to tackle one of the key root causes of global poverty.

The AGM for Global Justice Now (info & register), then followed by the conference: Shifting Ground: the fightback against corporate power in Scotland and the world (book your tickets for the conference)

Speakers include:
Ken Henshaw, a campaigner from Social Action in Nigeria, will be our international speaker, and will talk about the social costs of electricity privatisation in Nigeria.

Other speakers include Philippa Whitford MP from Common Weal and Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now. Plus performance poet Jenny Lindsay.

Climate change lobby – Speak up for the love of…

As part of the ‘Act Alliance’, Christian Aid, CAFOD and Hope For The Future are organising a coach to the event from South Yorkshire:

There will be two pick up points- Doncaster at 7am (Market Place, Car Park nr New Premier Inn) and Sheffield 7.45am (Sheffield Bus Station) for the lobby day.

The aim is to reach London in time for the Ecumenical service at 12 noon, and then join other lobbyists and campaigners in our constituencies groups at 1pm and the lobbying should be completed following the march at 4pm. The return coach will depart at 5pm in time for a civilised return time to Sheffield and Doncaster!

The cost is just £18 per person dropping off and picking up from London Embankment making the journey smooth. (They may be able to run a second coach if they have the right demand)
