Workshop: Having Difficult Conversations about Migration

October 8, 2019 by sheffield

Saturday 26th October, 2-5pm

This session will be about how to communicate effectively about the issues surrounding migration. Debates on these issues can be uncomfortable, upsetting or angry, and often do little to change anyone’s mind. At the same time, fighting for a progressive stance on migration is more important than ever, and we need to be able to persuade people who don’t already completely agree with us. The session will be led by an experienced trainer from Global Justice Now and will equip you with the tools to do that.
Free entry, donations welcome. Please RSVP as soon as possible to globaljusticesheffield@gmail.com as spaces are limited.
Venue: Central United Reformed Church, 60 Norfolk Street, S1 2JB

AGM and film screening: La Buena Vida (The Good Life)

August 18, 2019 by sheffield

Wednesday 2nd October

6:15pm: Global Justice Sheffield AGM, all welcome.
6:45pm: Refreshments
7:00pm: Film screening, La Buena Vida (The Good Life), with time for questions and discussion up to 9:15 pm.2019 10 02 La Buena Vida The Good Life jpeg

La Buena Vida: Jairo Fuentes is the young leader of the community of Tamaquito, a village in the forests of northern Colombia. Here, nature provides the people with everything they need to survive. For centuries, they’ve hunted in the mountains, foraged for fruit and reared hens, sheep and cattle. But the Wayúu community’s way of life is being destroyed by the El Cerrejón coal mine.

The companies such as Glencore, Anglo American and BHP Billiton, promise the villagers the blessings of progress, but the Wayúu place no value on modern, electrified houses – on the so-called “better life”. Instead, they embark on a fight to save their life in the forest, which soon becomes a fight to survive. La Buena Vida is the story of the Colombian village of Tamaquito, told against a global backdrop of rising energy consumption being driven by the pursuit of growth and affluence.

To be sure of a place for the film screening, email globaljusticesheffield@gmail.com to book.

Venue: Central United Reformed Church, 60 Norfolk Street, Sheffield S1 2JB

Current Campaigns

Don't let corporate courts block climate action.
Corporate courts give fossil fuel companies the power to sue governments for taking action on the climate emergency. They are an obstacle to a clean energy transition and to achieving climate justice. Tell Boris Johnson and the trade department not to let corporate courts block climate action.

Suspend patents on Covid-19 vaccines.
We are facing a global scarcity of vaccines because big pharma patents and corporate secrecy prevent other manufacturers from making them. We need the government to remove the barriers to ramp up global supply and ensure fair allocation of vaccines. No one is safe until everyone is safe. Join the campaign for A People's Vaccine.
