In Conversation with Andrew Haldane, Executive Director for Financial Stability, Bank of England

20th February, 6:00pm-7:30pm

Last year, for example, he praised the ‘Occupy’ movement for questioning the banks, whilst he was recently described by The Independent as ‘the one to watch’ at the Bank of England.

FREE. See more info and register.

Venue: Firth Court, Western Bank, S10 2TN.

Campaign success: EU takes historic step to stop banks betting on hunger

January 15, 2014 by sheffield

After 3.5 years of campaigning by WDM & it’s supporters, EU negotiators agreed to introduce regulation to prevent speculation by banks and hedge funds driving up food prices and exacerbating the global hunger crisis. The new controls will place a limit on the number of food contracts that banks and other finance companies can hold, and will force traders to open their activity to greater public scrutiny. Talk & practical: bringing sanity into the world of finance

October 27, 2013 by sheffield

Collapsing banks, money being created out of nothing, the belief in endless growth etc etc. How can we make sense of it all, when there are widely divergent expert opinions? To use a phrase that Schumacher coined, how can we have an economics as if people mattered. Sheffield Steiner Group are holding a talk (Fri 15th) and practical short course (Sat 16th) to help answer these questions.

Friday, 15th November, 7:30pm-9:30pm
Making sense of money – financial literacy for free initiative
From bars of gold to money as payments on mobile phones. Do we have as citizens the potential to act as if we were central bankers?

Saturday, 16th November, 10am -1pm
Money unveiled
This morning session will offer an opportunity to explore recent financial events in greater depth, through the lens of some of Rudolf Steiner’s economic concepts, particularly the three kinds of money – purchase, loan and gift. (From his World Economics Course in 1922). Is money ‘the root of all evil’ or can it be understood and worked with, so that it
can serve real human needs.

This course is for anyone: lay people and professionals, who are interested in entertaining a fresh response to what has become an increasingly stale set of opposing hypotheses

Venue: Freeman College, 88, Arundel St, Sheffield S1 2NG

Costs. Talk. £5/£3. Morning session £12/£8.
Both events £15/£9 or pay what you can afford

*Arthur Edwards, MSc (Econ) gives courses in economics and financial literacy and is editor of ‘Associate!’ a monthly journal on associative economics – ideas that gave rise to the setting up of Triodos, a social, ethical bank and influenced the artist and activist, Josef Beuys.

Current Campaigns

Don't let corporate courts block climate action.
Corporate courts give fossil fuel companies the power to sue governments for taking action on the climate emergency. They are an obstacle to a clean energy transition and to achieving climate justice. Tell Boris Johnson and the trade department not to let corporate courts block climate action.

Suspend patents on Covid-19 vaccines.
We are facing a global scarcity of vaccines because big pharma patents and corporate secrecy prevent other manufacturers from making them. We need the government to remove the barriers to ramp up global supply and ensure fair allocation of vaccines. No one is safe until everyone is safe. Join the campaign for A People's Vaccine.
