Day of Action on Corporate Courts, Saturday, May 21st, 10 am – 4 pm

May 11, 2022 by sheffield

We are planning to have a campaign stall in Sheffield city centre on The Moor (near the former Debenham’s), to campaign on the issue of “corporate courts” and the Energy Charter Treaty. We will be engaging with the public and encouraging people to sign petition cards addressed to the Prime Minister and the International Trade Secretary. asking them to
  • Exit the Energy Charter Treaty
  • Stop joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)

Corporate courts (ISDS) give fossil fuel companies the power to sue governments for taking action on the climate emergency. They are an obstacle to a clean energy transition and to achieving climate justice.

Fossil fuel companies are already using corporate courts to sue governments for over $18 billion – and that’s just a start. Industry insiders reckon the amounts at stake could be over $9 trillion. The UK needs to drop corporate courts in new trade deals, and exit the Energy Charter Treaty.

You can see more about the issue of corporate courts here, including case studies, and also read the campaign briefing.

If you are in Sheffield city centre on Saturday, May 21st, please come and join us on our stall.
Or you can sign the Global Justice Now petition here.

Life Or Debt: Big Money, Injustice and the Global Climate Emergency

March 23, 2022 by sheffield

As part of the Festival of Debate, Global Justice Sheffield are organising a talk and discussion on “Life Or Debt: Big Money, Injustice and the Climate Crisis” on Wednesday, May 11th, 7.00-9.00 pm at the Quaker Meeting House, 10 St James Street, Sheffield S1 2EW.

The debt crisis in the Global South is preventing countries like Zambia from fighting the climate crisis, as well as draining away resources needed for public services. Zambia pays more in external debt payments than on health, education, social protection and water and sanitation combined.

Zambia’s debt is 46% of government revenue. Meanwhile, several African countries such as Uganda have resorted to harmful oil extraction in order to generate the resources to pay off their external debts.

There is no climate justice without debt justice, and the increasing proportion of Global South debt owed to private creditors has already reached around one-third, often at much higher rates than other lenders.

Heidi Chow, Executive Director of the Jubilee Debt Campaign, will reveal how private lenders in the Global North are fuelling the debt crisis, and will lead discussion about the action needed – from immediate debt-cancellation, to the challenge of genuine transformative change.

Current Campaigns

Don't let corporate courts block climate action.
Corporate courts give fossil fuel companies the power to sue governments for taking action on the climate emergency. They are an obstacle to a clean energy transition and to achieving climate justice. Tell Boris Johnson and the trade department not to let corporate courts block climate action.

Suspend patents on Covid-19 vaccines.
We are facing a global scarcity of vaccines because big pharma patents and corporate secrecy prevent other manufacturers from making them. We need the government to remove the barriers to ramp up global supply and ensure fair allocation of vaccines. No one is safe until everyone is safe. Join the campaign for A People's Vaccine.
