Stop the re-licensing of glyphosate and support small-scale farmers

June 15, 2017 by sheffield

Global Justice Sheffield is supporting the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) to stop the re-licensing of glyphosate. An EU refusal to relicense glyphosate, the basis of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready patented seeds, would be a powerful contribution towards discrediting this way of farming worldwide.

This in turn would help to protect small-scale farmers in the global south from the current corporate bid to push industrial, soil-destroying farming methods on to developing countries, such as being driven into dependence on unaffordable patented GM seeds and the chemicals required to grow them which in turn could put these farmers into debt, or off their land.  You can find out more about this issue here, where you can also sign the ECI petition to the EU Commission: https://act.wemove.eu/campaigns/eci-glyphosate-int.

This complements Global Justice Now’s campaign to support the UN on a declaration of rights for small-scale food producers, which would be an important step to protect small farmers across the world from violence and persecution. Please call on the UK government to support this UN declaration: https://act.globaljustice.org.uk/time-fight-small-farmers-rights.

Current Campaigns

Don't let corporate courts block climate action.
Corporate courts give fossil fuel companies the power to sue governments for taking action on the climate emergency. They are an obstacle to a clean energy transition and to achieving climate justice. Tell Boris Johnson and the trade department not to let corporate courts block climate action.

Suspend patents on Covid-19 vaccines.
We are facing a global scarcity of vaccines because big pharma patents and corporate secrecy prevent other manufacturers from making them. We need the government to remove the barriers to ramp up global supply and ensure fair allocation of vaccines. No one is safe until everyone is safe. Join the campaign for A People's Vaccine.
