Discussion: War,Trade and Refugees (Derby)

November 27, 2018 by sheffield

Wednesday 5th December, 7:05pm-9:05pm

Join the Global Justice Derby group at their War and Refugees meeting.

Despite so much opposition, Wars carry on. Why? One of the reasons is that powerful countries and major corporations wage war over trade and resources. The consequent devastation destroys people’s homes and lives and leads to millions of refugees. This matters.

Guy Taylor (Global Justice Now) and Tom Unterrainer (Stop the War) will lead us in an open and informed discussion about the current crisis and what we can do about it.

Venue: Derby Friends Meeting House, St Helen’s St. DE1 3HY (next to Radio Derby)

Together for Climate Justice (London)

November 20, 2018 by sheffield

Saturday 1st December, 12-3pm

Join Global Justice Now activists on the march Together for Climate Justice.

The main march will assemble at Polish Embassy on Portland Place and march to Downing Street. The Global Justice Now meeting point is outside the Chinese Embassy on Portland Place.

More information

At the end of this month, representatives from the world’s governments will gather in Poland for the next round of UN climate talks. They meet under the shadow of a recent UN report which gave us just 12 years to take the measures necessary to keep global temperatures from rising by 1.5°C – beyond this, the consequences for millions of people around the world will be disastrous.

Yet UN climate talks in Poland hardly augur well. The Polish government has already suggested it will prohibit and repress any protests for climate justice, and it has consistently acted in the UN process as though it is the armed wing of the coal industry.

It has never been more important that we get out on the streets and demand real action on climate change.

Film screening and discussion: Fire in the blood

November 6, 2018 by sheffield

Saturday 24th November, 1pm – 4:30pm

Fire in the Blood is the inspiring story of the South African people taking on the drug corporations and the government itself, and actually winning the affordable prices they need – for now!

It depicts the obstruction by Western pharmaceutical companies to provide lowcost antiretroviral drugs used for treatment of HIV/AIDS to people in Africa. The documentary is just one example of how patents monopolize the markets, and how activists are responding to the extortionate prices.

Heidi Chow (the lead GJN campaigner on Big Pharma) will introduce the Sheffield launch of the new phase of the campaign against corporate profiteering from unaffordable prices for life-saving drugs in developing countries, and then take questions and lead the post-film discussions.

A light lunch and refreshments will be available.

Venue: Quaker Meeting House, 10 St. James Street, Sheffield S1 2EW (nr Sheffield Cathedral)

More info about the film

An intricate tale of ‘medicine, monopoly and malice’, FIRE IN THE BLOOD tells the story of how Western pharmaceutical companies and governments aggressively blocked access to low-cost AIDS drugs for the countries of Africa and the global south in the years after 1996 – causing ten million or more unnecessary deaths – and the improbable group of people who decided to fight back.

Shot on four continents and including contributions from global figures such as Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu and Joseph Stiglitz, FIRE IN THE BLOOD is the never-before-told true story of the remarkable coalition which came together to stop ‘the Crime of the Century’ and save millions of lives in the process.

As the film makes clear, however, this story is by no means over. With dramatic past victories having given way to serious setbacks engineered far from public view, the real fight for access to life-saving medicine is almost certainly just beginning.

A film by Dylan Mohan Gray, narrated by William Hurt.

Current Campaigns

Don't let corporate courts block climate action.
Corporate courts give fossil fuel companies the power to sue governments for taking action on the climate emergency. They are an obstacle to a clean energy transition and to achieving climate justice. Tell Boris Johnson and the trade department not to let corporate courts block climate action.

Suspend patents on Covid-19 vaccines.
We are facing a global scarcity of vaccines because big pharma patents and corporate secrecy prevent other manufacturers from making them. We need the government to remove the barriers to ramp up global supply and ensure fair allocation of vaccines. No one is safe until everyone is safe. Join the campaign for A People's Vaccine.
