Why we need economic justice for climate justice – and how can we make the leap?

May 4, 2016 by sheffield

Tuesday 17th May, 6:30pm-9pm

Sheffield Climate Alliance is hosting this event as part of the Festival of Debate – we invite all those concerned for social and economic justice to join a conversation about why climate justice means creating a fairer world. We’ve been inspired by the Leap Manifesto from Canada, which centres on “redressing terrible wrongs done to indigenous peoples; radically reducing economic, racial and gender inequalities; eliminating legal double standards for immigrant workers; and creating a whole lot of stable, well-paying jobs.”

To help us understand the challenge for our movement, we’ll be joined by insightful and provocative speakers including:

  • Shahida Siddique, CEO of Faithstar, a values-based enterprise working to benefit society, especially the marginalised and poor
  • Sarah-Jayne Clifton, an Economic Justice Campaigner with the Jubilee Debt Campaign
  • Philip Pearson, a trade unionist campaigning for Just Transition for workers and communities

Plus one more speaker to be announced, and a team of ‘listeners’ from different perspectives. We’ll have an action-focused, participatory debate that connects our many concerns. Please join us!

There will be refreshments and stalls available from 6.30pm and the meeting will commence at 7pm.

Venue: Quaker Meeting House – 10 Saint James’ Street, Sheffield, S1 2EW

Forwards not Backwards on Climate Change! March and Rally in Leeds

May 4, 2016 by sheffield

Saturday 7th May

Leeds Climate Action and others in West Yorkshire will be holding a ‘Forwards not Backwards on Climate’ demonstration on Saturday 7th May.

The demonstration will be connecting with the demonstration in London on 8th May to mark the anniversary of the 2015 election and the dismantling of climate policies since then – such as:

• Slashing subsidies to renewables while increasing subsidies to fossil fuels
• Blocking planning permission for onshore wind while overriding objections to fracking
• Continued expansion of aviation and road-building
• Cuts in funding for insulation

Assemble 12pm City Square Leeds (outside Leeds station). Set off 1pm for route around the city centre, returning to City Square for speeches. We plan to do small sections of backwards walking.

Film showing: The Divide

April 9, 2016 by sheffield

This event has been organised by Sheffield Equality Group

Wednesday 4th May, 7pm-9pm

The Divide: a documentary by Katherine Round, inspired by the critically-acclaimed, bestselling book “The Spirit Level” by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett.

The Divide shows the impact of the divide in income between us. People at the top struggling to get higher and afraid of those below them. People at the bottom struggling in a system that finds them worthless. The Divide shows a path towards greater equality and humanity.

Current Campaigns

Don't let corporate courts block climate action.
Corporate courts give fossil fuel companies the power to sue governments for taking action on the climate emergency. They are an obstacle to a clean energy transition and to achieving climate justice. Tell Boris Johnson and the trade department not to let corporate courts block climate action.

Suspend patents on Covid-19 vaccines.
We are facing a global scarcity of vaccines because big pharma patents and corporate secrecy prevent other manufacturers from making them. We need the government to remove the barriers to ramp up global supply and ensure fair allocation of vaccines. No one is safe until everyone is safe. Join the campaign for A People's Vaccine.
