Is climate on the menu at trade talks?

September 2021

September has been a busy month for the Reading group. We have concentrated on the trade campaign, ‘Don’t let corporate courts block climate action’. Jean Blaylock gave us an interesting talk, ‘Is Climate on the Menu at Trade talks?’ We had three stalls at various local events as well as a short action near the station on Global Justice Now’s Day of Action!

We have also been lobbying our two Reading MPs as we approach COP26. The group ‘Hope for the Future’ has been helping us to tailor our messages for each of our MPs. Alok Sharma is President of COP 26 so we have chosen subjects that have an international impact such as aviation, expanding local airports and the Cambo Oil Field; Matt Rodda is Shadow Minister of Pensions so we have been talking to him about pensions investments, insulation in pensioners houses and the National Investment Bank.

Is debt strangling climate action in the global south?

Thursday 21 October at 7.30pm

Covid-19 and extreme weather events show that governments should be prioritising funding for healthcare and for tackling climate change. Instead, governments in the global south have to prioritise the servicing of crippling debts to some of the largest financial corporations. Daniel Willis debt and climate campaigner from Global Justice Now will talk about ways in which we can change the global financial system to support these countries tackle climate change.

Grasping the nettle of emissions from aviation’ at 7.30pm on Wed 26 May

May 9, 2021 by reading

The inspiring speaker, Finlay Asher who spent 7 years designing engine concepts at Rolls-Royce for future Boeing and Airbus aircraft, gave the talk and answered questions. He quit his job in mid-2020 to counter aviation industry greenwash on “techno-solutions” and to campaign for increased regulation of aviation ahead of COP26 in Glasgow. He talked through the environmental impact of aviation, the viability of electric and hydrogen flight, the potential for alternative jet fuels, and carbon offsetting – and also gave his views on the policies required to curb air traffic growth.

Finlay’s talk from the Zoom meeting is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNGBXlkyhts

‘Deciphering Reading’s black history mural: kings, queens, colonialism & rebellion’ Wednesday 24 March

March 6, 2021 by reading

Alan Howard, the artist who created the mural, talked about its history and what it represents. He was joined by Miriam Rose who will examine how the transatlantic slave trade’s legacy continues with international finance and resource extraction in the global south.  The event was chaired by Dave Richards from RISC. The saga of the mural’s coming into being was fascinating.

This was particularly important in Reading this year as Alok Sharma, MP for Reading West, was appointed Minister for COP 26, the 26th United Nations Climate Conference.

This was an excellent training session. You can find the slides at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mJ8eCjfFP and the full recording at: 2FrCbLM9EUwHoTeLBo-Qhv?usp=sharing
