Bankers Day Out – supporting Wirral Trade Justice

October 18, 2015 by merseyside

I'm celebrating my huge bonus
I’m celebrating my huge bonus

Our  thanks to Glynn and Wirral Trade Justice for inviting Global Justice Merseyside to deliver our ‘Bankers Day Out’ sketch at their AGM on Friday 17th October.

The sketch was delivered in the form of a live television interview with Global Justice  Senior spokesman commenting on our High Street un-cute bankers celebrating their outrageous  bonuses – profits from  fossil fuel financing of the big mining corporations: Angle American, Glencore Xtrata, BPH Billinton   who have invested staggering millions  in extracting fossil fuels in countries like Burma, Indonesia, Columbia and  South Africa.

97 per cent of Climate Scientists say that climate change is driven by the emissions from coal, gas and oil burning that is causing the temperature to rise. Only 20 per cent of the fossil fuel that has been invested in can be extracted is to remain below  the  2 degrees Centigrade  maximum that would potentially tip climate into irreversible climate change disaster.

There is a huge dilemma confronting the governments, financiers and people of the world.

Part of the problem then is of over valuing the fossil fuel ‘asset’ in ground.  Investments already committed to extraction of the other 80 per cent are quite useless as the continued mining and use  of the fossil will cause temperatures to rise up

If the extraction continues at the present rate our grandchildren shall experience a very different harsh world to the one we inherited and will not thank us for that.

Keep it ( the fossil fuel)  in the ground is the best approach to keeping our planet from over heating.

See you at the Brink Liverpool – September 23rd for our Autumn meeting

September 2, 2015 by merseyside

We invite you to come and join us for our next meeting and help campaign for a fairer society for all.

Venue:    The BRINK, 21 Parr Street, Liverpool,  L1 4JN.

Time:       7.30 PM Wednesday September 23rd September

Global Justice Merseyside  is the local branch Global Justice Now

Global Justice Merseyside challenge corporate power and the policies that cause poverty and inequality all over the world;     we   do creative street campaigning, lobby politicians, get media coverage and organise local events such as film screenings and workshops.

Our present campaigns include actions on:

 Energy injustice and climate change

The corporate grip over energy keeps 1.3 billion people without access to electricity. And energy privatisation, supported by the UK government in countries like Nigeria, is putting equitable energy access even further out of reach;

Africa is producing more and more food. Why is hunger rising?

Huge corporations are scrambling to take control of Africa’s food at the expense of the small-scale farmers who feed most of the continent.

Help us end the support for the corporate take-over of Africa’s food via the international movement for Food Sovereignty;

TTIP: a threat to democracy, standards and jobs’

TTIP is a deal that aims to remove ‘non-tariff barriers to trade’. There’s very little obstacle to trade between the EU and the US at present — tariffs are at an all-time low. But corporations, on both sides of the Atlantic, want to remove other rules and regulations that might be stopping them from making even bigger profits.

Join us  and help  make  another, fairer world possible
