Global Justice Leicester @ the Riverside Fesival

June 8, 2015 by Leicester & Leicestershire

Global Justice Leicester was in the heart of the Festival – on the Boulevard overlooking the canal.

Global Justice Stall at Riverside Festival

It was an exciting day with friends new and old coming to find out about the latest Global Justice Now campaigns.

We chatted about the energy injustice campaign

The corporate grip over energy keeps 1.3 billion people around the world without access to electricity, and privatisation is putting fair levels of energy access even further out of reach.

Festival goers signed a petition against the use of UK Aid money to fund energy privatisation in Nigeria.

Despite the UK’s long and unsuccessful experience with energy privatisation, the Nigerian government is supported by aid from the British government. The UK continues to pour public money into a privatisation programme that seems doomed to failure, neglecting policy options that could address Nigeria’s serious energy supply problems.

  • Find out more and get involved.
  • Corporate-controlled energy has been a disaster for people and the planet. But there are alternatives.

This is an exciting time to be campaigning with Global Justice Leicester – why not join us?

April 24, 2015 by Leicester & Leicestershire

Global Justice Leicester and members of 38 Degrees set up a stall in Town Hall Square  Leicester.

TTIP Stall Leicester

We gave out leaflets and asked shoppers to sign the petition against TTIP.  TTIP and CETA are a threat to democracy, the environment, consumers and labour standards. But we can stop them!

Have you signed the petition yet? If not, why not sign it now.

Energy Democracy – lots to be hopeful about

April 23, 2015 by Leicester & Leicestershire

Working for Energy Democracy in Developing Countries and Britain

On April 14th an enthusiastic audience gathered at Christchurch to find out more about Energy Democracy.

Speakers at Energy Democracy Talk

Sam Lund-Harket from Global Justice Now, highlighted the way energy injustice is destroying people’s lives. He also spoke about rays of hope – good news stories about communities where alternative energy is generated to give clean and democratically controlled energy for everyone.

Clare Welton of Fuel Poverty Action Group – spoke movingly of people in poverty in the UK who struggle with utility bills. She explained the Energy Bill of Rights and work that is being done to ensure that individuals struggling with bills are aware of their rights. It is important that information is made available to empower people in poverty.

Fuel Poverty Action Group produces:

  • Leaflet – Having Problems with your Energy Company – Know your rights
  • Mini-guide –  In trouble with your Energy Company – Know your rights

What you can do:

  • Find out more about moving towards a just energy system
  • Let people who are struggling know that there are alternatives to being forced into an unfair situation with their energy companies.

Fairtrade Fortnight – Choose products that change lives

March 31, 2015 by Leicester & Leicestershire

Global Justice Leicester and the Knighton Justice Group celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight on Uppingham road in Leicester.

Stall Narborough Rd

Passers by were offered Fairtrade chocolate that had been donated by the Narborough Rd Co Op. We would like to thank them for their support. They gave us a warm welcome and provided leaflets so that customers could see the range of Fairtrade products that were available in the store.

Narborough Rd is busy on Saturday morning and many shoppers stopped for a chat. It was encouraging to meet so many young people who had taken part in special events in their schools and colleges for Fairtrade Fortnight.

Fairtrade Fortnight is a powerful reminder to all of us that the simple act of choosing to buy a Fairtrade product, literally changes lives.

Why not find out more on the Fairtrade Foundation website
