TTIP Global Day of Action

April 24, 2015 by Leicester & Leicestershire

Global Justice Leicester and members of 38 Degrees set up a stall in Town Hall Square  Leicester.

TTIP Stall Leicester

We gave out leaflets and asked shoppers to sign the petition against TTIP.  TTIP and CETA are a threat to democracy, the environment, consumers and labour standards. But we can stop them!

Have you signed the petition yet? If not, why not sign it now.

Energy Democracy – lots to be hopeful about

April 23, 2015 by Leicester & Leicestershire

Working for Energy Democracy in Developing Countries and Britain

On April 14th an enthusiastic audience gathered at Christchurch to find out more about Energy Democracy.

Speakers at Energy Democracy Talk

Sam Lund-Harket from Global Justice Now, highlighted the way energy injustice is destroying people’s lives. He also spoke about rays of hope – good news stories about communities where alternative energy is generated to give clean and democratically controlled energy for everyone.

Clare Welton of Fuel Poverty Action Group – spoke movingly of people in poverty in the UK who struggle with utility bills. She explained the Energy Bill of Rights and work that is being done to ensure that individuals struggling with bills are aware of their rights. It is important that information is made available to empower people in poverty.

Fuel Poverty Action Group produces:

  • Leaflet – Having Problems with your Energy Company – Know your rights
  • Mini-guide –  In trouble with your Energy Company – Know your rights

What you can do:

  • Find out more about moving towards a just energy system
  • Let people who are struggling know that there are alternatives to being forced into an unfair situation with their energy companies.

Take back our world – another world is possible

March 31, 2015 by Leicester & Leicestershire

Take back our world! was the launch event of Global Justice Now, the new name for WDM in 2015.

What a fantastic day. Featuring international speakers, films, workshops, music, an exhibition of Mexican street art … and the opportunity to share a passion for justice with likeminded people.

Mexican street art

Street art by Rosario Martinez Llaguno and Roberto Vega Jimenez, members of the Mexican art collective Lapiztola Stencil, based in Oaxaca. Commisioned by Global Justice Now for a free exhibition that coincided with the Launch of Global Justice Now

Why not join us in 2015 and become part of a global movement to challenge the powerful and create a more just and equal world.

Global Justice Leicester says no TTIP

January 10, 2015 by Leicester & Leicestershire

During Autumn 2014 Global Justice Leicester campaigned against the corporate power grab

Our public services, environment and democracy are under threat from the biggest corporate power grab in a decade. Behind closed doors, the EU is drawing up a dangerous new trade deal called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

We have stalls at the Christians Aware Christmas Fair and at the Beauchamp College Craft Fair.

WDM campaigning Christians Aware

People we talked to were concerned that corporations would be able to sue governments if they make public policy decisions which could harm their future profits. Regulation which currently protects people, public services and the environment could be removed.

WDM campaigners relaxing

This is a serious subject, but there was the opportunity for a relaxed discussion about the sort of world that we would like to live in.

Find out about the corporate power grab and add your voice to the petition against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)

Campaigning in the Summer …

November 3, 2014 by Leicester & Leicestershire

Resisting the new Scramble in Africa – a speaker meeting and stalls out and about …

Speaker from Shepherd Food Ministries in Nigeria

On 1st July, Dr Ola Ogunyemi spoke about the work of Shepherd Food Ministries in Nigeria.  Ola spoke at first hand about support poor farmers in their struggle to remain independent in an increasingly globalised world. If farmers are to keep hold of their land, they need up-to-date advice and an infrastructure that helps them to make a profit from their produce. There is a big gap between the support network of the farmers who grow the majority of the world’s food, and the money and help available for large multinational seed companies.

Christine Haigh talking about Scramble for Africa

Christine Haigh of WDM spoke about the Scramble for Africa, and the need to support small farmers in Africa with our Government Aid, rather than the large multinational companies.

We also had a stall at the Leicester University Botanical Garden. Scramble for Africa took on a new meaning among the plants and specialist plant growers.

We’re part of Global Justice Now, a democratic membership organisation which campaigns against inequality and injustice in the global economy. We want to see a world where ordinary people control the resources they need to live a decent life, rather than corporations and the super rich calling the shots.
