Stop tar sands going global

May 18, 2011 by glasgow

Using tax-payers money, RBS is helping to finance the ridiculously polluting, carbon-intensive extraction of tar sands. Thousands of lives and livelihoods are under threat from French oil giant Total’s plans to mine tar sands in Melaky, one of the poorest regions in Madagascar.

Come and hear Holly Rakotondralambo, toxic pollution & health researcher for VOARISOA Observatoire Madagascar, speak about the threats to the people and biodiversity of Madagascar from the tar sands industry.

Public talk. Boyd Orr Building, University of Glasgow, 6-8pm, 23 May, free entry

The World is Melting…

April 23, 2011 by glasgow

Just in case you were in any doubt about the validity of the science behind climate change, we recently observed concrete (or rather sponge) evidence at our climate cafe hustings.

Oh, and we talked to some politicians too, whilst we were eating the world. They all seemed committed to tackling climate change here in Scotland. We’ll see what the public make of their promises on 5th May…and then it’s up to us to hold them to account once they’re in Holyrood.

Politics and cake

April 20, 2011 by glasgow

Just a wee reminder about our climate hustings – a chance to talk to the politicians face to face before you vote for them. It’s a cafe debate, not a Question Time, so you don’t have to be bored by posturing or frustrated by the lack of time to ask your question…and there’s free tea, coffee and cake!

Thursday 21st April, Adelaide’s Bath Street (just up the hill from the Kings Theatre)

Oil Bank of Shame

April 16, 2011 by glasgow

It’s funny how often people agree with you when you suggest that bankers aren’t perfect. Now all we need to do is keep the pressure on the politicians to understand this basic point…

Royal Bank of Shame

April 13, 2011 by glasgow

It’s that time of year again – the RBS AGM is just around the corner, so we thought we’d let them know what we think. Despite £45.5 billion of public funding, RBS is still massively supporting investments in fossil fuels, including climate-trashing tar sands in Madagascar and Canada. Come and join us in the centre of Glasgow and let them know it’s not OK to carry on as the Royal Bank of Shame.

Saturday 16th April, 11am

Outside RBS Sauchiehall Street (corner of West Nile Street)

We’ll be asking people to join our photo petition so that we can send a whole wall of objections to the RBS AGM next week

The (Blue) Eagle has Landed

Dressing up as a Barclays banker in Argyle St certainly attracts some attention – from shoppers and the press… Let’s just hope the politicians take some notice too.
