Climate crime scene in Buchanan Street!

November 9, 2013 by glasgow

Glasgow shoppers tell HSBC to stop fuelling climate change - smallIt’s not all just Christmas shopping in Buchanan Street at this time of year. We opened up a climate crime scene today, to raise awareness of the way that UK banks are fuelling climate change. Whilst the Scottish Government and even that lot at Westminster are taking some steps to reduce UK carbon emissions, the big UK banks are busy throwing money at fossil fuel projects all around the globe. Big banks, eh – don’t you just love ’em? They tried their hardest to trash the global economy with their crazy gambling, and now they want to trash the very ecosystem that we all rely on.

Time to stop them in their tracks – take action now

Tell HSBC to stop fuelling climate change!

November 5, 2013 by glasgow

Carbon capital - piling on the pressure imageAll the big UK banks are fuelling climate change by funding fossil fuel projects around the world. And HSBC are among the worst – financing coal to the tune of £3.8bn, and £75bn in share issues for fossil fuel companies over the last few years. So we thought we’d open a wee coal mine outside the bank to highlight the craziness of funding global warming.

Saturday 9 November, 12-1pm

Outside HSBC (corner of Buchanan St and Argyle St)

We’ll have a couple of bankers, a couple of miners, and maybe even a human piece of coal to raise awareness with the good folk of Glasgow. Come along to find out more, and sign an action card if you have a minute to spare.

Or you can take action online right now.

Ironic weather

October 29, 2013 by glasgow

Storm St JudeApologies to all those who were looking forward to the Carbon Capital speaker event last night (28 Oct) – we had to cancel because our speakers couldn’t get out of London. Despite having made it to the UK from Colombia and Indonesia, the storm in the south of England messed up the trains and trapped them in the big smoke. Seems a bit ironic that an event about climate change should be scuppered by extreme weather.

Anyhow, don’t despair – keep watching this space for a whole pile of events coming up in the next few weeks…

Fighting carbon capital…

October 8, 2013 by glasgow

Not content with trying to wreck the global economy, those pesky financial institutions are funding climate change by lending shed-loads of cash to fossil fuel extraction around the world. We’re honoured to have two speakers from campaigns in Colombia and Indonesia, coming to speak in Glasgow:

Monday 28 October, 7pm

Adams Room, Teacher Building, St. Enoch Square, G1 4DB

Print
Yasmin Romero Epiayu is from Fuerza de Mujeres Wayuu, an indigenous women’s organisation standing up against the vast Cerrejon coalmine in Colombia, and Hendrik Siregar is the coordinator of JATAM, the Indonesian mining advocacy network, which works with affected communities.
It’s a free event, so come and hear about the impacts of carbon capital in the global South. For more info, contact us at wdmglasgow@gmail.com

Skeletons in the Lib Dem’s closet

September 25, 2013 by glasgow

Campaigners at the Lib Dem conference 2013 2c - smallWho would have thought it? The Lib Dems have failed to keep a manifesto pledge. At the 2010 election, they committed to holding a full audit of all the developing country debt owed to the UK government. However, Vince Cable (who is responsible for UK Export Finance, as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills) is now strangely silent on the matter.

So during the Lib Dem conference in Glasgow, we joined up with our friends from Jubilee Scotland to remind him of the issue. Still not sure what was most scary – the skeletons, the giant Vince heads, or the Lib Dems’ failure to live up to their principles…

For more info about the issues, see Jubilee Scotland’s site
