No TTIP!!!!

July 3, 2014 by glasgow

NoTTIP day of action 12-07-14

Behind closed doors, the EU and the US have been quietly negotiating a major new trade deal. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) will give corporations more power over our society, environment, public services and democracy. Crucially, it will include an ‘Investor-State Dispute Settlement’ clause, allowing companies to sue governments if new policy reduces their profit. But there’s a growing campaign against it on both sides of the Atlantic – come and join us as part of the No TTIP day of action.

Saturday 12 July, 11am – 1pm, outside Hillhead Library, Byres Road

We’ll be making a spectacle of ourselves for the press (there’ll be puppets and bowler hats and everything!) and also talking to passers-by about the madness of TTIP. This might be an EU-US treaty, but it’s being negotiated to set the standard for all trade deals around the world. Click here for more info.

Taking Coals to Gogarburn?

June 25, 2014 by glasgow

RBS AGM 25-06-14Those lovely people at RBS were having their AGM in Edinburgh today, so we thought we’d go along and take some of the tasty coal that they’ve been throwing money at. It’s not so long ago that we the people bailed RBS out of the humongous hole that they’d dug for themselves, into which they were trying to drag the entire global economy. And we still own a majority stake in the bank. So it seems kind of strange that they’re playing fast and loose with all our futures by continuing to fund coal and other fossil fuel projects around the world.

You can take action here to tell them to stop this nonsense!!!

The new scramble for Africa?

June 11, 2014 by glasgow

New scramble for AfricaThe UK government and the big agribusiness corporations are trying to take control of Africa’s food. We’re holding an informal evening with film clips and chat about our new campaign to stop UK aid money being used to to help corporations slice up African agriculture.

Thursday 19 June, 7-8:30pm

The Bank Cafe, Neilston, Glasgow G78 3EA

Come along to find out more about WDM’s campaign and for tips and advice on how you can help lobby your local MP…and if you happen to live in East Renfrewshire you get a bonus prize because your MP is the Shadow Secretary of State for International Development.
The event is free and open to all, but please let us know if you’re thinking of coming along by registering here.  And you can see more about the campaign here.

A bit of rain never hurt anyone…

June 3, 2014 by glasgow

IMG_2821OK, so it rained all afternoon, but that didn’t stop the crowds at the Gibson Street Gala and it certainly didn’t dampen the lucky dip enthusiasm. People were queuing up to try the lucky dip and have a go at our new educational jigsaw. Who knew that the whole of China, the US, India, Europe and Mexico would fit into the same area as Africa? That’s the madness of colonial mapping for you.

Oh, and 180 people signed our petition to Justine Greening MP, the Secretary of State for International Development, telling her to stop using aid money to fund the corporate takeover of African agriculture. Not to mention all the people who signed cards to send to their MPs. Time to sit up and listen, Justine – people don’t huddle under brollies to take political action unless they mean it!

The return of the lucky dip

May 15, 2014 by glasgow

West End Festival 02-06-13 004bThese days it’s hard to find many things that are free, as rampant neo-liberalism rides roughshod around the world.

But we’ll still be running our FREE lucky dip at the Gibson Street Gala. And this year it’s got a whole new geographical-educational dimension… as well as free sweets.

Sunday 1 June, 12-6pm, Gibson Street G12

Oh, and we’ll also be talking to people about our food sovereignty campaign and how the UK government are throwing aid money at multi-nationals to help them carve up African agriculture for profit.

So come along, enjoy the free lucky dip, have a chat about the campaign, and just dive into the wonderful gala. Fingers crossed that it’s as sunny as last year!

May Day May Day May Day

May 5, 2014 by glasgow

May Day rally 2A good day out at the May Day march and rally on Sunday. Always good to feel the sense of solidarity with so many people and there was definitely a bigger crowd this year. You can feel the growing sense of anger at the vicious attacks on the welfare state and on anyone who isn’t a multi-millionaire, emanating from the Coalition government at Westminster. And Owen Jones was great at drawing the links to international issues too.

Good to talk to people about our new agribusiness campaign and to get so many signatures on our petition to stop the nonsense of aid money being spent to help out the multinationals.
