Climate crime scene in Buchanan Street!

November 9, 2013 by glasgow

Glasgow shoppers tell HSBC to stop fuelling climate change - smallIt’s not all just Christmas shopping in Buchanan Street at this time of year. We opened up a climate crime scene today, to raise awareness of the way that UK banks are fuelling climate change. Whilst the Scottish Government and even that lot at Westminster are taking some steps to reduce UK carbon emissions, the big UK banks are busy throwing money at fossil fuel projects all around the globe. Big banks, eh – don’t you just love ’em? They tried their hardest to trash the global economy with their crazy gambling, and now they want to trash the very ecosystem that we all rely on.

Time to stop them in their tracks – take action now

Ironic weather

October 29, 2013 by glasgow

Storm St JudeApologies to all those who were looking forward to the Carbon Capital speaker event last night (28 Oct) – we had to cancel because our speakers couldn’t get out of London. Despite having made it to the UK from Colombia and Indonesia, the storm in the south of England messed up the trains and trapped them in the big smoke. Seems a bit ironic that an event about climate change should be scuppered by extreme weather.

Anyhow, don’t despair – keep watching this space for a whole pile of events coming up in the next few weeks…

Open market

A really good day out at the West End Farmers Market today (10th Aug), chatting to lots of people who were really interested in our campaign to stop bankers gambling on food. 35 people signed campaign cards before we ran out. And they’ll be winging their way to 14 different MPs from across Glasgow and beyond – let’s hope they’re listening (and that includes you, Danny Alexander MP!)

Good to see that a man in a bowler hat and pinny doesn’t scare people away from what matters…

Come on George, listen to the people…

March 12, 2013 by glasgow

The good people of Shawlands are clearly concerned about the lunacy of bankers speculating on food. Nearly 50 of them signed a campaign card on Saturday, urging George Osborne to support tough new European regulations on banks. And very few people wanted a free cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee – maybe it’s too hard to drink a cuppa when you’re spitting with anger at the bankers…?

Poor old George

March 5, 2013 by glasgow

The WDM pub quiz was a great success – a packed house, lots of laughs, and some ruthless competition. Oh, and some good blether between teams representing a whole host of organisations too. A fine combination of Jubilee cyclists, with a few well-educated ringers were the victors, whereas the team made up entirely of George Osborne came last… Maybe it’s time for some new ideas, Mr. Osborne?

Lobbying Tom Harris MP

December 12, 2012 by glasgow

On Friday 7th December, Glasgow WDM members went to lobby Tom Harris MP, Shadow Minister for Environment and Rural Affairs, and MP for Glasgow South. We asked him to support our campaign for an independent parliamentary inquiry into the privatisation of UK aid. He agreed to write to Malcolm Bruce, the Chair of the International Development Select Committee. For more info, see www.wdm.org.uk/aid
