GJN’s activists gathering is coming to Glasgow!

August 24, 2023 by glasgow

GJN activists from across Scotland will be discussing how all of us can be involved in the struggle against corporate power and for climate justice

Join us for our activist gathering in Glasgow to hear stories of community action for global justice from Colombia to Scotland. Whether fighting to protect the sacred land and water of local communities in Colombia, fighting to stop new oil extraction in the North Sea, or calling for an international treaty to end fossil fuels, activists know that taking power away from corporations is vital for climate justice.

Get inspired by the stories from young activists, and learn and plan what action you can take locally in solidarity.

Make Polluters Pay: Resisting corporate power for global climate justice

We are in a climate emergency. While the impact is not be the same or equal, it is global. Those nations and people bearing the brunt are those with the least scope to take the most meaningful action. We need an international treaty to turn this around. We saw this in action when our ozone layer began to disappear. Global co-operation is possible and it works!

A treaty does not need to be universal to be effective. A grouping of ‘champion’ countries, including those most vulnerable to climate change, non-producers and small- and mid-level producers, can exercise significant influence. We want Scotland to be just such a global leader. More than 80 councils and cities across the world have now backed the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty including councils in Edinburgh, London and Brighton.

The treaty would take the form agreement to plan the end of fossil fuel exploration and extraction in a way that is genuinely equitable by design. The treaty would be a framework to end the licensing of new fossil fuel exploration and extraction, the phasing out of existing stock-plies and production, and fast-tracking a just transition.

While we have your attention, a gentle reminder that Glasgow GJN will be running a stall on Saturday 26th August in Glasgow City Centre.  We will meet at the entrance to Marks and Spencer on Argyll Street at 10.50am.

Hope to see you all soon!

We’re part of Global Justice Now, a democratic membership organisation which campaigns against inequality and injustice in the global economy. We want to see a world where ordinary people control the resources they need to live a decent life, rather than corporations and the super rich calling the shots.
