Growing Change film night

October 27, 2012 by Global Justice Bradford

Over forty people enjoyed the film about the Venezuelan food revolution in the salubrious surroundings of the Delius centre. The home made cake and the wide ranging discussion also contributed to a stimulating evening; with (of course) the opportunity for all those present to take immediate action via WDM’s latest campaign!

WDM Film Night

Doing anything on October 18th?  No?  Then head on over to Delius Arts and Cultural Centre (postcode BD7 1AA) for a hand-picked film screening.  We haven’t decided which film to show yet, but I can exclusively reveal it’s going to be a) about or related to WDM campaigns, and b) fascinating.  Crucially, it’s free!

After the film, there’ll be opportunities for finding out more and getting involved.

If you can’t make the film, don’t miss Benny Dembitzer speaking at the Delius Centre on 15th November.

Update: We’ve now decided the film will be “Growing Change”: a film about Venezuela’s food revolution.  Here’s a trailer to pique your interest.

WDM Speaker Night: Benny Dembitzer

September 3, 2012 by Alex

(Click on poster for larger version)

Benny Dembitzer, economist, author and member of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize-winning team, is coming to Bradford in November to give a talk about his new book.

Why should you come?  Well, aside from the good cause, the buzzing atmosphere and the free biscuits*, Benny’s talk should be fascinating.  His book is about how factors such as climate change, population growth and water shortage combine to create famine.  Expect an exciting, informative evening.  There will also be an opportunity to buy his book at the end, and if you feel the need for urgent change there will (as always) be ways to get involved.

Benny’s talk will take place at the Delius Arts and Cultural Centre from 7.00 pm on the 15th November.  It’ll be free to attend.  We’ll try to get posters up beforehand.

*There will probably not be biscuits, unless you count the verbal biscuits Benny will be generously distributing.**

**Benny’s talk is definitely going to be better than that metaphor.

Update: turns out there WILL be biscuits!

Rio + 20: Our World is not for sale

June 20, 2012 by Global Justice Bradford

Bradford World Development Movement members met David Ward MP on 2.6.12 to deliver a ‘Trojan horse’ .  The Trojan horse represents the false green economy that is being proposed at Rio + 20, the  Earth Summit taking place in Brazil from 20 – 22 June.  The government’s proposals look great on the surface but could be deadly for the planet: putting a financial value on natural resources such as water and forests.  David Ward said he would pass on a strong green message to Nick Clegg who will represent the UK at the summit. Campaigners want the UK to push for a real green economy that will benefit the world’s people and the planet.

Positive meeting with MEP

March 5, 2012 by Global Justice Bradford

Six WDM Bradford members met Timothy Kirkhope MEP (Conservative) for Yorkshire and Humberside in February.  They discussed Food Speculation and put forward views on the need for controls to prevent international speculators causing spikes in the prices for basic foods, which cause serious suffering in the poorest countries and is not good for UK citizens either. Timothy Kirkhope was well briefed on the subject. He said that the European Parliament and the Commission were taking the issue on board, and promised to follow up WDM concerns and keep the group informed.

Ann commented that she was ‘encouraged by how supportive Mr Kirkhope was of our views of the dangers of food speculation’.
