Gerry Sutcliffe, Labour MP for Bradford South, gave an interesting talk at the Bradford AGM. A wide ranging discussion was held on issues ranging from food speculation to climate change and the concept of ‘economic growth’. Gerry offered some valuable suggestions about how to take these concepts further to reach new audiences.
Gerry Sutcliffe MP will speak at AGM on 5th January 2012
Our next AGM will be held on Thursday 5-1-12 at the Treehouse Cafe on Great Horton Road, near the university, at 7.30pm (open from 7pm)
We are pleased to welcome Gerry Sutcliffe, MP for Bradford South, who will answer some of our questions about food speculation.
You are welcome to join us.
Peace Fair activity
Thanks to Oxfam Leeds for the loan of their stall over lunchtime.
WDM invited members of the public to speculate about food by rolling a large die. The prize was the number of chocolates on the front of the die. The deal was that passers by then listened to the facts about food speculation internationally and how this was affecting the poor . There was a lot of interest from the public and all those approached signed an action card.
UPDATE: We now have a video showing Bradford WDM at the Peace and Crafts Fair on Youtube:

Summary of Food Speculation Meeting Sept 2011
Christine Haigh from national WDM facilitated an informative and interactive evening. This was a joint event with members from both Leeds and Bradford WDM . Two discussion groups took place: one planned for lobbying MEPs and the other had some thought provoking ideas for stunts to raise awareness of the importance of regulating the food industry to reduce speculation which increases hunger and and poverty.
These ideas will be followed up at the October meeting. Join us to finalise campaign plans.
