National Lobby of MPs Friday 17th May

May 13, 2024 by reading

Now we need to talk to our MPs:

A National Lobby of MPs

Friday 17 May

Our aim is to get the UK government to endorse the Treaty. The treaty is proposing a path to a fast, fair and properly financed energy transition. This would involve committing to its three pillars:

  1. End fossil fuel expansion
  2. Fairly phase out existing use of fossil fuels
  3. Accelerate a just and equitable transition

Global Justice Now’s main campaign briefing explains this in more detail, as does their shorter MP briefing.

Please contact your MP and ask them to endorse the Fossil-Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. If possible, arrange a meeting. Otherwise write a letter or email.

One Englishman’s View of the Philippines

7.30pm Wednesday 22 May

How much do you know about the Philippines? It rarely features on our news.

Mick Lacey, our speaker, has family there. Mick has a strong view on justice and injustice in the world economy. Using his experience of the Philippines, he will report on how the economy of his family’s hometown was affected by globalised capitalism’s reaction to the opening of China to international investment.

Mick will provide some samples of traditional Filipino foods from 7pm before the meeting. Please invite your friends and please use the link below to advertise the event if you have a Facebook page:

Campaigning Activities

We have continued our campaigning activities throughout the summer and autumn of 2023. As well as holding stalls at many of the Reading Festivals, we campaigned in Broad Street on national event days such as ‘Make Polluters Pay Loss and Damage’ outside Barclays bank in September and ‘Make Amazon Pay’ in November. In December a few of us went to London to join the COP 28 march.

We want to see a world where ordinary people control the resources they need to live a decent life, rather than corporations and the super rich calling the shots.
