Jason Hickel: Degrowth – a 21st Century Revolution

March 18, 2025 by admin

Pennine Theatre, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield S1 1WB
Tuesday 29 April. Doors 6.30pm, start time 7pm

Organised by Sheffield Festival of Debate in association with Global Justice Sheffield.

World-leading political economist Jason Hickel will present a compelling strategy for the democratic transformation of society. Our current obsession with limitless growth drives ecological breakdown, yet our leaders insist it is the only way to create social benefits. Jason will debunk these myths, outline the limits of ‘green growth’, expose the costs to the global south, and put forward policies that provide a good standard of living for everyone on the planet while keeping us within our planetary boundaries.

The conversation will be chaired by Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now, and we will discuss a plan for an eco-socialist future: keeping resource use within earth’s ecological limits, using technology that benefits people rather than profit, and through politics that enhances community wellbeing

Current Campaigns

Don't let corporate courts block climate action.
Corporate courts give fossil fuel companies the power to sue governments for taking action on the climate emergency. They are an obstacle to a clean energy transition and to achieving climate justice. Tell Keir Starmer and the trade department not to let corporate courts block climate action.

Prime Minister: Support the Global Exit Plan from Fossil Fuels
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is a global plan to bring a fast and fair end to the era of coal, oil and gas. This transformative global plan is being championed by climate-vulnerable countries in te global sout. Now we need big polluting states like the UK on board.

We want to see a world where ordinary people control the resources they need to live a decent life, rather than corporations and the super rich calling the shots.
