Food speculation

Taking action against unregulated Financial Speculation on basic foods

The original campaign reached a conclusion and gained some notable successes.  A press release  summarising what was achieved was issued at the time.

However as the EU legislation moves into implementation, the European Commission has issued proposals that threaten to weaken the measures.  Therefore Global Justice Now are asking for the help of all concerned activists in lobbying our MEP’s once again to further press for effective regulation.

Our group has left the remainder of this page in place as there are some useful resources, referenced here, for anyone interested in some of the background that motivated the campaign.

The problems caused by unregulated speculation on food are outlined in this 3 minute video from Aljazeera.  If you should have more time, the issues are covered in more detail in a very good 7 minute video at this link

If you would like to know more, further information can be found

at this link on the main web site:

Finally here are a small selection of media articles on the subject:

A very succinct 3 minute web video, from the Australian media, on Commodity Trader Glencore at this link

It includes some key facts on the effects of food speculation particularly on impoverished peoples.

BBC – Face the facts Radio programme from 13th Jan 2011

One of several pieces on the subject by Aljazeera can be located at this link
