Africa demands climate justice: public meeting

September 29, 2011 by brighton

Come to our public meeting on Monday 10th October, 7pm at the Brighthelm Centre on North Road to hear Bongani Mthembu from South Africa and Deborah Doane, director of WDM, speak about the urgent need for climate justice ahead of the UN climate talks in South Africa in December.

Bongani Mthembu is from Umlazi, South Africa’s second biggest township. He is a member
of a Durban environment group, and campaigns against industrial pollution in the area. He
is working to educate ordinary South Africans about environmental injustice, and organising
demonstrations at December’s talks, calling for solutions that also tackle poverty and
inequality.

Bongani will be joined by Deborah Doane, director of the World Development Movement,
which is hosting the event.

Caroline Lucas joins our Barclays campus protest

September 29, 2011 by brighton

Action at Sussex University

Green Party MP Caroline Lucas joined our Sussex University campus protest outside its Barclays branch last Monday.

As students enrolled in clubs and societies during the annual Freshers’ Fair, we took to the pathways of the university in outrage at the bank’s role in profiting from commodity speculation, guaranteeing massive price hikes in basic staples and forcing the world’s poor consumers into starvation.

“It’s outrageous that Barclays still have a space on the Sussex campus,” says Catherine Rowe, a Masters student and a member of our group. “They’re literally making a killing.”

Just Do It comes to Brighton

August 4, 2011 by brighton

Activist film of the summer – no, decade, Just Do It will be at the Duke of York’s cinema on Saturday 20th August at 4pm. Featuring many of WDM B&H’s friends and cohorts, it should hopefully inspire us all to get on with changing our corner of the world.

There’s a Q&A afterwards and we’ll have a stall somewhere in the cinema so do come along and stay for a chat afterwards.

Barclays Hove stunt video

July 18, 2011 by brighton

Not content with RBS: The Return (see below), we’ve now done a double take with Barclays, this time in Hove where we highlighted the big bank’s morally dubious gambling on food prices.

We were also recorded for posterity – and this time not by security. Watch our one and a half minute video here or follow the link below right.

Thanks to Vicki for taking the time to film us, especially as she’s so busy being an award-winning documentary film-maker herself

Barclays held to account

May 9, 2011 by brighton

We pitched up outside Barclays on North Street on 6th May to highlight how its bankers are making a killing (literally) by speculating on food prices, causing dizzying fluctuations in the real price of commodoties which push poor people further into poverty.

We had an evil banker-eagle, foodstuffs at vastly inflated prices, a megaphone and lots and lots of action cards & letters to the chancellor signed. There were also several promises to change bank accounts from customers, and a private surveillance van parked across the street. We must be upsetting somebody…

climate camp in Sussex this Easter

April 18, 2011 by brighton

We like to link up with other local campaigning groups and there are none more active than South Coast climate camp. They’ll be setting up a self-sufficient camp somewhere in Sussex from 23rd April to the 1st May, with the aim of learning about the state we’re in and finding solutions to those problems.

There’ll be workshops on everything from resisting the cuts to allotment keeping, a vegan food kitchen, space for kids and lots of like-minded people.

And best of all it won’t be far to travel. See their website for details of exactly where it’ll be and how to get involved.
